Why Is My Business Not Showing Up on Google?
Table of Contents
Business not showing up on Google? There are usually a handful of reasons: an unverified or suspended profile, a listing still being processed, incorrect address details, an eligibility issue, or that you’re simply searching from outside your service area. Google ranks local businesses on three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. Miss on any one of those, and a listing can vanish from the results altogether.
The Most Common Reasons a Business Is Not Showing Up on Google
We’ve audited Google Business Profiles for dozens of clients across Chesterfield, Sheffield and the wider Derbyshire and Yorkshire areas. The same handful of problems come up again and again. Here’s what to check first.
- Profile not verified. This is the single most common cause, and it’s the first thing worth ruling out. Google simply won’t show an unverified listing in local search or on Maps.
- Listing suspended, with no warning. There are two types: a soft suspension, which limits how much you can manage the profile, and a hard suspension, which removes it from view completely.
- Still processing. Newly created or freshly verified profiles can take up to 14 business days to show up. Give it time before assuming the worst.
- Wrong address or map pin. Mismatched details send Google conflicting signals, and the listing can drop out of local results as a result.
- Doesn’t meet eligibility rules. Virtual offices, co-working spaces, and addresses shared with unrelated businesses all risk falling foul of Google’s guidelines.
- Searching from the wrong location. Results are personalised by place. Check your own listing from outside your service area and it can look broken when it isn’t.

How Google Decides Which Businesses Appear
Even a fully verified, fully filled-out profile isn’t guaranteed a spot. Google weighs three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. According to Google’s own guidance on improving local rankings, complete and accurate business information is what helps match a profile to the right searches.
Distance is simple: how close are you to the person searching, or to the place they’ve specified? Fixed-address businesses can’t do much about this one. Service-area businesses, ones that go to the customer rather than the other way round, have more control, provided the service area is defined properly in the profile.
Prominence is about trust: how well-known and credible Google thinks you are. Reviews, citations, and your wider online presence all feed into it. Ahrefs’ research on local SEO found that a higher volume of recent, well-rated reviews is a strong positive signal.
This is one of the most common patterns we see: a genuinely solid profile still ranking poorly in the map pack, purely because reviews have dried up. We’d estimate this affects around 4 in 10 of the profiles we audit.
NAP consistency, your business name, address and phone number matching exactly everywhere, feeds into this too. Moz’s research into local search ranking factors treats reviews, citations, and links as separate categories, each one capable of pushing a listing out of contention on its own.

What to Check If a Verified Profile Still Isn’t Showing Up
Getting verified is the beginning, not the end of the story. Verified but underbuilt profiles are one of the most frequent issues we come across, where Google simply doesn’t have enough to go on yet.
- Profile completeness. Every empty field is a missed signal: hours, description, services, photos, the lot. Google’s own guidance is clear that complete profiles perform better.
- Primary category. The single biggest lever you have for relevance. Wrong fit? Change it and watch what happens.
- Keyword stuffing in the business name. Straightforwardly against the guidelines, and it can get you suspended. Your name needs to match your shopfront, signage, or official registration- nothing added.
- Duplicate listings. Search Maps for your own business name and address. Find a second one, from an old owner, a data aggregator, or a forgotten account, and it needs sorting.
- Reviews, or the lack of them. No reviews, or only stale ones, send a weak signal. Asking happy customers directly is one of the fastest fixes going.
- Website SEO. Your profile and your site work as a pair. Poor indexing or thin authority on the website side, and your profile’s prominence takes the hit too.
If you’ve been through all of this and you’re still not showing up, it’s worth checking whether you’ve been suspended. Google doesn’t always tell you. Our local SEO services include a local presence audit covering exactly this: suspension checks and profile optimisation as part of a wider review.
